Ideal Gases

The ideal-gas equation of state, compressibility factor, and specific heats.

Many applications allow gases to be modeled as ideal. This module defines that model, its range of validity, and how to correct it using the compressibility factor.

What you will learn

  • Apply the ideal-gas equation of state and recognize when it is valid.
  • Use the compressibility factor Z for real gases.
  • Work with the specific heats of ideal gases.

Study tip

Be clear about the difference between a gas and a vapor, and about when it is better to use property tables instead of the ideal-gas model.
